Rumor: China Mobile Begins 12 Mln TD-SCDMA Handset Tender

An industry source has revealed that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) began issuing notifications of standards to manufacturers yesterday for its anticipated new round of TD-SCDMA handset procurements. The documents state that China Mobile plans to concentrate its purchases on mid-to-high-range G3 (TD-SCDMA) handsets, with the goal of procuring approximately 12.2 mln G3 handsets, including 1.5 mln flagship mobile internet phones, 300,000 dual-SIM/dual-standby phones, 3.2 mln multimedia smartphones, 4 mln fashion phones, and 3.2 mln regular smartphones. Manufacturers can submit bid applications, and results are expected in April.
