Beijing to Track Population Movement for Policy Planning

The Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission has revealed that the municipal government, utilizing China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) 17 mln Beijing subscribers, will construct the "Beijing Resident Migration Information Platform" to track population distribution in key areas as well as resident's migration patterns during different times of day to help the government formulate traffic planning and population management policies. The first stage will focus on Beijing's highly-populated Huilongguan and Tiantongyuan districts and will be completed in H1 2011. Li Guoguang, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission's societal development office, said that strict data privacy measures will ensure that individual user data cannot be exposed.
