MoC: China's Internet Cafe Market Reaches RMB 77 Bln

The Department of Culture Markets of China's Ministry of Culture recently released its 2010 year-end report on China's internet cafe market, which puts the market size for 2010 at RMB 77.12 bln, a decrease of 12.96% from 2009's RMB 88.6 bln.

The report also notes that by year-end 2010, the number of internet cafe users in China had reached 163 mln, an increase of 28.47 mln users since 2009, or annual growth of 21.1%. In terms of the scope of the market, there were a total of 144,000 internet cafes in China in 2010, with a combined total of 14.28 mln computer terminals. Internet cafe franchise chains comprised nearly 30% of the market; of those, four chains operate nationwide, and in 2010 there were a total of 351 province-based Internet cafe chains. According to the Ministry of Culture, no approval will be given this year for individual Internet cafes, and the majority of growth will be seen in franchise chains.
