MIIT Announces February 2011 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its February 2011 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:

Telecom operating revenues were RMB 76.63 bln (USD 11.65 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 156.97 bln (USD 23.86 bln), up 11.6% over the same 2-month period of 2010. Core services accounted for RMB 144.37 bln (USD 21.94 bln) of the cumulative total, up 9.3% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to 20.99 bln (USD 3.19 bln).

Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 8.17 mln in February, with mobile subscribers growing by 9.11 mln to 878.83 mln, and fixed-line subscribers dropping by 0.94 mln to 293.47 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by 0.86 mln subs to 26.91 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased by 82,000 to 266.56 mln.

A total of 76.36 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of February, bringing the total for the first 2 months of 2011 to 145.48 bln, a 5.7% increase over the figure during the same period of 2010.

Broadband added 1.91 mln new registered users in February to reach a total of 130 mln. In contrast, dial-up lost another 22,000 users, lowering the total dial-up user base to 5.83 mln.

4.25 mln new 3G subscribers were added in February to reach a total of 55.99 mln, in line with the combined 3G figures reported by China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) in February. In contrast, the figure reported by the MIIT for China's total mobile subscribers (i.e. 2G plus 3G combined) by the end of February was 16 mln greater than the combined total previously reported by China's three main operators (the MIIT's reported mobile subscriber total in any given month has, historically, been approximately 17-24 mln greater than the combined figures reported by the three main operators).
