Sina Replaces Google Search with Self-Developed Engine

Sohu IT, 3/29/11

Liu Ji, deputy general manager of Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) marketing department said yesterday that this month Sina stopped using Google's search engine to power on-deck search on its portal following the expiration of Google's contract. Search results on Sina.com.cn are now generated by Sina's own search technology.

Google declined to comment on the matter. Google spokeswoman Jennie Johnson said that although the company was unable to comment on specific partnerships, Google had announced last year that it would no longer provide search to Chinese partners after fulfilling existing contracts.

Editor's Note: Sina's search portal (search.sina.com.cn) currently features on-deck search by news, topics, images, blogs, microblogs, video, music, product reviews, stocks, weather, maps, film showings, and live performances.
