Rumor: Asus Tablet to Pre-Install Tencent QQ Apps

Donews, 3/30/11

Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Asus (LSE: ASKD; 2357.TW) has reportedly signed a strategic agreement to embed Tencent's (0700.HK) QQ product line on its EeePad tablets, according to an industry source. The source claims that the partnership has entered the R&D phase and a new tablet product will soon be released.

Tencent launched its WebQQ browser-based applications platform in H2 2010, which included over 1,700 applications, resembling an operating system in itself. The recently released QQ for Pad tablet application for iPad and Android also resembles an OS.

Editor's Note: Tencent's QQ for Pad 1.0 supports numerous plug-ins for Tencent products such as Qzone, QQ Mail, QQ Music, Tencent Microblog, Tencent News, and Soso search. For more background on this topic, please see "Tencent WebQQ Partially Resumes Service" MD 11/05/10 issue.
