Qiyi Launches PC Desktop Client

CCID, 7/01/11

Chinese internet company Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) online video joint venture, Qiyi, has released a desktop media player client aimed at attracting PC users to the site. The PC desktop client, which Qiyi has been developing for nearly a year, allows users to watch video content free of charge without visiting Qiyi's website.

The client was released for open beta testing in late March this year. Spokesperson Gao Wei said that the client uses P2P technology and a built-in accelerator to provide faster speeds when viewing via the client or Qiyi's website.

Other features include allowing users to skip past opening sequences and closing credits, adjust picture brightness, and take screenshots of video content. Baidu VP Yuan Bin revealed that Baidu's new media player client will soon allow users to watch certain content offline. The new feature allows for full pre-buffering of entire films and other content.
