Rumor: China Mobile to Launch New Mobile IM Client

Beijing Times, 9/03/11

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) will reportedly soon release its new Fei Liao free cross-platform mobile IM product. The product is part of China Mobile's attempt to compete with rival mobile IM products such as Beijing-based mobile application developer Xiaomi's MiTalk, and Tencent's (0700.HK) Weixin. According to a source within China Mobile, a beta version of Fei Liao will soon be available for multiple mobile OS platforms, including iOS, Android and Symbian.

Editor's Note: An industry source told Tencent Tech that Beijing-based IT solutions provider Ultrapower Software (300002.SZ) was retained by China Mobile to develop Fei Liao based on China Mobile's existing Fetion mobile instant messaging platform. Fei Liao also features recorded voice messaging functionality. For more information on this topic, please see "Rumor: ASPire's Fetion Contract Expires," 7/13/11 issue.
