Rumor: SMG Appoints New Chairman

A senior producer at Shanghai Media Group (SMG) subsidiary Shanghai TV recently revealed that Qiu Xin had been tapped to become the new chairman of SMG, but that the news had not been officially announced. An SMG employee working in the editor-in-chief's office said that he had heard the same rumor.

Born in 1965, Qiu graduated from Fudan University. Since August 2005, Qiu has served as the deputy Party secretary of the Jiefang Daily Group newspaper company, and as chief editor of the Jiefang Daily.

An industry insider said that as of last month, SMG's 2011 revenues had nearly approached the RMB 11.3 bln it achieved in revenues for all of 2010. The company's revenues could total RMB 17 to 18 bln by year's end, a nearly 50% increase over 2010.
