Taiwan Approves Xiamen-Kinmen Submarine Cable Project

Fujian Daily, 9/22/11

Taiwan's National Communications Commission yesterday authorized Chunghwa Telecom to jointly lay a submarine cable between Xiamen and Kinmen in cooperation with mainland China's three major operators. Chunghwa Telecom will invest approximately half of an estimated NTD 200 mln required for the project, with the remainder split between China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH). The project will be completed in Q1 2012. According to Chunghwa Telecom, the project is unlikely to use equipment provided by mainland China vendors.

Editor's Note: According to the Taipei Times, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Telecom and Far EasTone are jointly investing NTD 100 mln, but Chunghwa Telecom signed the contract with the mainland China operators on behalf of the other two companies.
