Rumor: 3G Penetration to Reach 15% in Q1 2012

According to a source within the operator, an executive in China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) terminal division recently revealed during an internal meeting that, based on data from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), 3G users will account for 15% of total mobile users in China by Q1 2012. As of August this year, mainland China had a total of more than 940 mln mobile users, of which 93 mln, or approximately 10%, used 3G terminals.

The source also estimated that China Mobile will sell between 35 and 40 mln TD-SCDMA terminals in 2011.
