Shanghai OnStar, Shanghai Bell Partner on TD-LTE Telematics

GM Media Canada, 10/28/11

Navigation software company Shanghai OnStar is joining forces with Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell (ASB), to develop telematics services based on the fourth-generation LTE digital communication network in China.

Their demonstration program is aimed at helping accelerate the development of next-generation wireless communications. The R&D process has entered the application testing stage.

Shanghai OnStar's GPS and CDMA 2000-based network is currently providing services for more than 400,000 users in China. Once 4G services become available, the reaction time for its existing 14 telematics services - including Automatic Crash Response, Remote Door Unlock and Stolen Vehicle Location - and Shanghai OnStar's latest mobile app will be significantly reduced. Test results show that information can be transmitted more than 10 times faster via the 4G LTE network.

A 4G concept car jointly designed by Shanghai OnStar and Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell showcases a broad variety of telematics services with even more options:

In-Vehicle Videoconferencing - The new remote mobile office will prove to be a great help for busy business clients with tight schedules. By simply pressing a button, users can have OnStar connect to a videoconferencing system, allowing them to make decisions without being in the office.

Remote Video Monitoring - In the case of a crash or carjacking, the OnStar remote video monitoring system is activated to show clear images inside and outside the vehicle. The system can provide firsthand visual information for security and rescue personnel, and facilitate the quickest, most accurate decision making.

In-Vehicle Internet Use and Video Transmission - Vehicles equipped with OnStar will be transformed into entertainment spaces, providing Web access and enabling video transmission anytime, anywhere - even if users are away from urban areas and Internet hotspots.

As of September 10, 2011, two call centers in Shanghai and Xiamen had provided navigation services over 7 mln times, remote door unlock services more than 270,000 times, and emergency assistance more than 80,000 times. They had also helped lead to the recovery of 359 stolen vehicles.
