Rumor: Shanghai Telecom, SMG to Form IPTV JV

An industry source revealed recently that Shanghai Media Group (SMG) and Shanghai Telecom had formed a plan to establish a joint venture that would be responsible for promoting IPTV services in Shanghai post-network convergence. The JV would also serve to tie the two operators' assets together, moving them from a competitive relationship to a cooperative one. A spokesperson for the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Radio, Film & TV said that a joint venture company would be in compliance with "the spirit of relevant policy," but said that there had been no moves to register a JV in Shanghai.
