MIIT Drafts SIM Card-Based Contactless Payment Standards

Netease Tech, 11/29/11

Dai Xiaohui, deputy head of the Department of Science Technology at China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), announced during the Mobile Payment Conference of China in Beijing today that MIIT is drafting a national standard for contactless payment using SIM cards and NFC terminals. Dai said that MIIT considered specialized SD cards and adhesive stickers to be attached to users' SIM cards, but SD card solutions proved too difficult to make compatible with various terminals, while stickers were deemed unsecure.

Dai said that while the 13.56 MHz standard is more mature, the 2.4 GHz standard is an indigenous standard and is more easily adopted by the telecom industry, therefore the national standard will include both technologies.
