A mainland Chinese contract manufacturer revealed recently that Qualcomm recently moved against Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company MediaTek (MTK), lowering its 3G handset chip prices to levels competitive with MTK's. Historically, Qualcomm's chip solutions have been at least 20% more expensive than MTK's. The manufacturer also stated that sales of MTK's 650 MHz MT6573 chip had peaked in early October, followed by its 1 GHz MT6575 chip featuring integrated GPS, FM, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi support. The chip's form factor and price point made it competitive in the China market and led to widespread adoption by Chinese handset makers and ODM developers. Qualcomm's MSM7727 and MSM7727A compete directly with the MT6573 and MT6575, respectively.
