China Begins Testing CMMB VOD Services

Zhang Chengyun, deputy GM of mobile phone TV operator China Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), recently disclosed that CMMB VOD services have entered the R&D and testing stage. Currently, users in CMMB coverage areas pay RMB 6 per month for access to 6-7 mobile phone TV channels. The VOD service is CBC and China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) exploration of a new business model. CBC general manager Liu Yanjun said that CBC will optimize the CMMB network, release more terminals, enrich its content offerings, and expand its business models in partnership with China Mobile in 2012. CMMB urban coverage currently reaches 98.2%, with over 35 mln CMMB terminal users and 16 mln paying subscribers.
