China Mobile: TD-LTE Fees to Be Lower than TD-SCDMA

Beijing Business Today, 3/05/12

In a March 4 interview with Beijing Business Today, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) chairman Wang Jianzhou said that TD-LTE would go into full commercial operation in 2012, adding that TD-LTE service costs would be lower than 3G in the future. The biggest obstacle in the development of TD-LTE has been hardware, Wang said, particularly terminal hardware. When asked about a possible partnership with Apple, Wang said that technical obstacles to a handset partnership between China Mobile and Apple were being removed with the release of new Qualcomm chips that addressed problems with China Mobile signal reported by Apple hardware users. 15 mln China Mobile subscribers currently use iPhones, a figure that has grown by roughly 1 mln new subscribers per month since the second half of 2011.
