Zhejiang Unicom Launches Mobile Gaming Platform

National Business Daily, 3/21/12

On March 20, Zhejiang Unicom announced the launch of "Shouyou Shijie" ("Mobile Game World," http://www.173sy.com), a mobile game store for which it has already signed a strategic partnership agreement with "Angry Birds" developer Rovio. Unlike general-purpose mobile application stores, "Shouyou Shijie" focuses solely on mobile games. An Android client is available for the platform, and an iOS client is in late-stage testing, with Java and Windows Phone clients to follow. China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) said that it would derive profits from the platform both through mobile data fees incurred by Unicom subscribers downloading games from the platform, and through profit-sharing agreements with mobile game companies.
