China to Add 35 Mln FTTH Households in 2012

At the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) March 30 deployment meeting for broadband upgrades, MIIT minister Miao Wei said that one of the goals of broadband speed upgrade efforts this year would be to add FTTH coverage for more than 35 mln households, to increase the penetration of 4 Mbps or faster access plans to more than 50% of all access options, to add more than 20 mln new fixed-line broadband subscriber households, to increase public WLAN hotspot coverage, and to further promote and increase broadband adoption and drive a decrease in unit bandwidth prices.

As of the end of 2011, there were 156 mln registered broadband subscriber accounts in China, 83% of whom had access speeds of 2 Mbps or higher. FTTH coverage reached 45 mln households.
