Shen Guoding, VP of The9 (Nasdaq: NCTY), revealed recently that the Shanghai-based online game developer and operator's mobile gaming platform The9 Game Zone (http://m.the9.com) now has more than 10 mln registered users. The9's wireless division has reached partnership agreements with more than 60 domestic marketing channels and has released more than 880 licensed games overseas, which have been downloaded a total of more than 12 mln times. The9 Game Zone supports the iOS, Android, and Java platforms, and has implemented connections to leading domestic SNS platforms. Among the more than 60 marketing channels with whom The9 has signed agreements in China are the country's three major telecom operators, third-party online app stores, and mobile equipment manufacturers.
Role-playing games remain Chinese mobile users' favorite category of games, Shen said, predicting that the mobile online gaming and social gaming markets - both of them focuses of The9's development and licensing strategies - would grow significantly this year on smartphones. In-app payment and in-app advertising will be key to creating revenues from mobile gaming, he said.
