China's Q1 2012 smartphone shipments surpassed those of the United States for the first time, accounting for 22% of the global market share, according to global research firm Canalys. The US' market's share of total global shipments for Q1 2012 stood at 16%. China's double-digit growth in shipments was mainly due to China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) introduction of the latest iPhone. However, Samsung accounted for 22% of smartphone shipments in the Chinese market in Q1 2012, taking first place, followed by Apple with 19%. Nokia dropped to third place in China, but the new Lumia Windows Phone could help the struggling handset manufacturer in Q2 2012. Two-thirds of smartphones shipped in China in Q1 2012 ran the Android OS.
