Rumor: China Mobile Wants China Telecom to Adopt TD-LTE

Sina Tech, 9/03/12

An unnamed senior executive at China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) reportedly issued an internal memo to the heads of each provincial branch, emphasizing that China Mobile does not want TD-LTE to be a minority standard and wants a second domestic mobile operator to adopt the standard.

China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) WCDMA standard is set to evolve into FD-LTE 4G, while China Telecom's (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) post-CDMA2000 EV-DO 4G evolution remains uncertain, and China Mobile is pushing for China Telecom to choose TD-LTE.

China Telecom chairman Wang Xiaochu, however, recently stated that Chinese government authorities have revealed no details on the timetable for 4G licensing and spectrum allocation.
