Rumor: China Telecom Tests FDD-LTE Network in Guangzhou

Sina Tech, 11/09/12

An industry source revealed today that a number of global telecom equipment manufacturers convened in Guangzhou three months ago to construct an FDD-LTE trial network for China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) free of charge. While the trial network is extremely small, the source said, testing results have thus far been nearly ideal.

Senior China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) officials previously expressed hopes that China Mobile would not be the only operator to use the TD-LTE standard. Previously released TD-LTE spectrum plans allocate up to 190 MHz for the standard, and industry speculation is that TD-LTE spectra will be used by China Telecom as well, rather than solely by China Mobile.
