Beijing May Require Real Name Registration for Wireless Services

Sohu IT, 12/31/12

The Beijing Internet Information Office, Beijing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, and other municipal agencies recently convened a meeting with China's three telecom operators - China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) - where a consensus was reached that Beijing will likely lead the nation in implementing a real-name system for wireless services. Users will be required to provide real name credentials when signing a mobile contract or face termination of services.

Currently, approximately 60% of the three major mobile operators' customers have provided real name registration information.
