Rumor: China's MIIT to Issue TD-LTE Licenses to All Three Telcos

Tencent Tech, 5/21/13

According to a source close to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the ministry will issue TD-LTE licenses to China's three main telecom operators, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), effectively requiring all three operators to deploy TD-LTE networks. However, if an operator decides to build an FDD-LTE network instead, they may do so only after applying to the MIIT and receiving a license.

China Mobile's Shanghai branch recently announced that 5,000 users have been selected to take part in city-wide TD-LTE trials using 4G-enabled data terminals such as MiFi units, data cards, and residential gateways, starting on June 1. China Mobile also recently began public transportation network 4G experience trials in various regions, including the provinces of Hubei and Jiangxi.
