Rumor: Sina Microblog, Alibaba to Launch Social E-Commerce Platform

BiaNews, 7/30/13

According to an industry insider, Chinese internet company Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) Weibo microblogging platform will release an e-commerce platform in August, "Yun Mao." The Yun Mao site will be built on a big data and cloud computing platform, and will be positioned as a social marketing platform for merchants on Alibaba Group's B2C e-commerce site TMall and C2C and B2C site Taobao. The site will also provide tools allowing TMall and Taobao merchants to link TMall and Taobao store user data, as well as create their own Sina Weibo-tied social e-commerce sites and mobile apps.

Editor's Note: The Chinese characters for "Yun Mao" can be interpreted to mean "Cloud TMall." For more information on this topic, please see "Alibaba Merchants to Place Ads on Sina Microblog Via Etao," MD 5/17/13 and "Rumor: Sina Microblog to Launch Customized Taobao Version," MD 6/23/13 issues.
