Rumor: China Unicom to Support In-Game Purchase Via Call Credit

A representative from China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has announced at the 2013 China Internet Conference, held in Beijing from August 13 to 15, that the company will launch a new service allowing users to purchase in-game virtual items with calling credit at the end of August. China Unicom has reached cooperative agreements with Beijing-based mobile game developer Ourpalm (300315.SZ) and Shenzhen-based online game developer and operator ZQGame (Zhongqingbao Interaction Network) (300052.SZ) to implement closed beta testing of the service on a number of the companies' games.

According to the agreements, the gaming companies will receive 80% of revenue from in-game virtual item sales and China Unicom will receive 20%. Currently, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) receives a 30% share of revenue from in-game virtual item sales under similar agreements with mobile gaming companies.
