Rumor: Coship to Release Smartphone OS

Tencent Tech, 1/06/14

According to industry sources, Chinese TV and set-top box (STB) manufacturer Coship Electronics (002052.SZ) will soon release its own smartphone operating system. The name of the new OS has not yet been determined.

Coship will reportedly announce the OS at an event on January 9, at which time details of the operating system will be revealed.

Coship issued a notice on January 4 stating that the company has entered into an agreement to acquire Shenzhen-based Quanzhida Communication for RMB 29.83 mln. Following the acquisition, Quanzhida will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Coship.

Quanzhida Communication is a developer of operating systems for mobile devices, with multiple copyrights to its name. From 2010 to 2013, the company was responsible for developing operating systems for three generations of China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) "Wo Phone" smartphones.
