Sina Weibo-invested Mobile SNS WeMeet Tests "Mega Group Chat"

TechWeb, 2/10/14

Chinese mobile chat SNS app "WeMeet" ("WeiMi"), a recent recipient of investment from internet company Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) Sina Weibo Venture Capital fund, has launched a "mega group chat" ("Qun Lianmeng") feature. Within each "mega group," members can view group status updates and join regional and other sub-groups based on location, age, and a variety of other factors. Chinese celebrity Lin Gengxin will reportedly be the subject of one of WeMeet's first mega groups, communicating with large groups of fans through the entire mega group, or smaller groups through targeted sub-groups. Apple's China App Store has recently added a paid WeMeet service, allowing users to become a "Lin Gengxin monthly paid member" for RMB 30/month.

WeMeet will release application programming interface (API) ports for the "mega groups" to third-party operators and developers to add new services as needed.
