Alipay Wallet Plans Mobile Healthcare Project

Sohu IT, 5/28/14

Zhang Jiangang, VP in charge of Chinese third-party payment processor Alipay's O2O (online to offline) business unit, has revealed details of Alipay's "future hospital" project, headed by Alipay's "Alipay Wallet" mobile app team and currently in the planning stages. The project will use Alipay's payment, user data, and big data capabilities to build a comprehensive mobile medical care and health management platform. The project will be carried out in three stages:

1. Helping hospitals to construct mobile medical systems that allow users to make appointments, pay medical fees, view post-consultation medical reports, and communicate with hospital staff all through the company's Alipay Wallet mobile app. This phase of the project is expected to last 1 to 2 years;

2. Creating a mobile medical services ecosystem, encompassing electronic prescriptions, medicine delivery, real-time filing and processing of insurance claims, and other medical services that will help eliminate the need for repeated (and often inconvenient) hospital visits. Alipay expects this phase to be completed within 3 to 5 years;

3. Constructing a health services management platform that takes advantage of Alipay's big data processing and analytical capabilities. Development of such a platform will involve the creation of new standards for medical data representation, as well as an open API enabling health service providers, medical system operators, hospitals, manufacturers of wearable devices, and other third parties to connect to the platform. In addition to offering services to patients, the platform will also provide a nationwide early-warning system for relevant government departments, as well as an overview of medical resource allocation for government reference. This final phase should be completed within 5 to 10 years;

At present, more than 10 national-level hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen have expressed a willingness to partner with Alipay as part of the "future hospital" project, and more than 30 regional hospitals have signed partnership agreements. In addition to hospitals, more than 40 medical system operators and health management service providers have also expressed a willingness to partner with Alipay, among which Alipay has already signed cooperation agreements with 5 companies.
