Enlight Media Inks Strategic Partnership with Alibaba

Beijing-based film and television program production and distribution company Enlight Media (300251.SZ) has announced that it has entered into a three-year strategic partnership with Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA). The partnership will seek to maximize content distribution and commercial earnings by integrating Enlight Media's strengths in film and television programming, celebrity performances, and other areas, with Alibaba's digital entertainment industry, e-commerce platforms, and online financial services.

The main areas of cooperation outlined in the deal involve film investment and production, intellectual property rights, online video service, film-related merchandise, and ticket sales. The partnership outlines that Enlight Media and Alibaba are both entitled to at least a 5% stake in five films produced by the partner company every year. Enlight Media and Alibaba's entertainment subsidiary, Alibaba Pictures Group (1060.HK), will also jointly produce or jointly invest in and distribute five films, although that number is tentative.

Alibaba's B2C and C2C e-commerce sites Tmall and Taobao are also involved in the partnership. Enlight Media will open a flagship store on Tmall for the sale of film-related merchandise, and will give priority ticket-sale rights to Taobao's online film ticketing service. Alibaba will also promote Enlight Media theme parks by providing an online platform for purchasing park tickets as well as other O2O services.
