Rumor: China Unicom Drafts Proposal to Share 4G Network with China Telecom

China Economic Weekly, 11/23/15

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has drafted a tentative proposal for 4G network sharing between it and rival operator China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), according to recent media reports. The agreement covers arrangements for sharing base station, equipment room, and transmission resources, as well as technology. The proposal also suggests the establishment of corporate headquarters-level, provincial-level, and city-level specialized work units to assure the continued development of the partnership between the two firms. When contacted, China Telecom refused to comment, while China Unicom stated that it is still looking into the matter, though the partnership will not involve any restructuring of the two firms.
