WeChat Launches Fuzzy Search for In-app 'Applets'

TechWeb, 2/12/17

Chinese internet and mobile services firm Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat mobile messaging app has added a fuzzy search feature to its in-app "applets" service (also called "Mini Program"), which will return all related applets containing a key search term.

Because applets were designed to be accessed through QR codes, there is no centralized entry point to access them. If users wish to use an applet, they must either scan the QR code or search for the exact name, which tends to be long and complicated, because Tencent does not allow applets to share names with any official accounts.

Common search terms, such as discover, food, stickers, music, movies, news, and weather, have already completed preliminary open testing. However, not all search terms will return related applets. For example, "technology" does not have any search results.

The feature is only supported on WeChat's latest version, V. 6.5.4.
