Electric Vehicle Rental App PonyCar to Pilot Baidu's Facial Recognition Software
China.com, 8/22/17
The artificial intelligence arm of Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) will soon integrate its facial recognition identity verification technology with PonyCar, a mobile electric vehicle time-sharing rental platform that focuses on alternative energy car sharing. The first batch of shared cars equipped with Baidu's facial recognition technology will be tested in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, with the feature accessible to users via the PonyCar app.
In cooperation with PonyCar, Baidu will introduce two artificial intelligence technologies, namely, facial recognition and optical character recognition (OCR). Baidu's OCR recognition technology can recognize users' ID information in order to extract relevant data and cross-check it with a database to more efficiently verify user identity. Users will then follow a voice prompt that guides them through the facial recognition process. The platform then performs a comparison between the user's photo and their face to further verify the users' identity.
PonyCar is operated by Shenzhen-based Letuhui Technology.
