Children's Reading App 'Koala Reading' Raises USD 8-digit Series A

36Kr.com, 12/05/17

Beijing-based Xiangyue Education Technology, developer of mobile children's reading app Koala Reading, recently announced the completion of USD 8-digit Series A funding from Qiming Venture Partners and Granite Global Ventures. The funding will be used to consolidate the company's base level artificial intelligence technology and for expansion of its consumer market.

Koala Reading created a quantified Chinese graded reading standard (ER Framework), which can be used to evaluate the reading difficulty of any text in Chinese. Apart from helping teachers teach reading, Koala Reading helps schools create digital libraries and connect student reading level tests with offline reading behavior.

Koala Reading also conducted an extensive study in January this year of the reading abilities of 300,000 Chinese students across first- through fourth-tier cities with the support of the Ministry of Education's Basic Education Quality Monitoring Center and the National Language Committee's Chinese Aptitude Education Center. The study resulted in the largest scaled and normed set of reading aptitudes of Chinese students and serves as the benchmark for evaluation of every student's reading ability.

Editor's Note: Koala Reading rates the difficulty of reading materials to make appropriate recommendations to students based on their reading level. The app also uses online reading comprehension tests and data, such as time spent reading, to provide feedback to schools.
