China's MIIT Releases September 2017 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its September 2017 and Jan-Sep 2017 telecom industry statistics.

Figures for the first nine months of the year were as follows:

Telecom operating revenues for Jan-Sep 2017 were RMB 1.104 trln (USD 165.48 bln), up 3.6% YoY, of which core services revenue was RMB 962.40 bln (USD 144.31 bln), up 6.0% YoY.

Total telephone subscribers increased by 11.44 mln in September to reach 1.592 bln. In September, the number of mobile subscribers increased by 12.56 mln to 1.395 bln, while the number of fixed-line telephone subscribers decreased by 1.12 mln to 197.40 mln. Among the fixed-line telephone subscribers, 151.57 mln were urban subscribers, up 1.03 mln month-on-month, and 45.82 mln were rural subscribers, down 2.15 mln month-on-month. Among the mobile subscribers, 3G subscribers saw a drop of 0.79 mln in September, decreasing the total 3G user base to 141.73 mln, and 4G subscribers increased by 17.51 mln to reach a total 4G user base of 946.76 mln.

A total of 491.192 bln SMS messages were sent in Jan-Sep, down 1.2% YoY.

In terms of internet access, China's number of fixed-line broadband registered accounts increased by 7.26 mln in September, raising the total to 337.28 mln. Fixed-line broadband subscribers with 20 Mbps connections or higher increased to over 300 mln, accounting for 89.0% of all fixed-line broadband users, while subscribers with 50 Mbps connections or higher reached 207 mln, accounting for 61.5% of all fixed-line broadband users. FTTH subscribers grew by 7.04 mln to 278.78 mln. The country's number of IPTV subscribers increased to 112 mln.

Mobile internet subscribers saw a net increase of 16.45 mln in September, bringing the total to 1.234 bln. Of this total, the number who access the Internet via a mobile handset was over 1.15 bln, representing an 82.4% penetration rate among mobile phone service subscribers.

China's mobile Internet access traffic reached 2.40 bln GB during the month of September. Average mobile Internet access traffic per mobile subscriber in September was 2,007 MB, up 140.0% YoY. Total mobile internet traffic in the 9-month period from January through September hit 15.43 bln GB.

China's three telecom operators, China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), and China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), had mobile revenues of RMB 695.0 bln between Jan-Sep 2017, up 5.2% YoY. Mobile revenue accounted for 72.2% of total telecom revenues this period. The telecom operators' fixed-line communication revenues between Jan-Sep 2017 were RMB 267.4 bln. Fixed-line revenue accounted for 27.8% of total telecom revenues this period.

In Jan-Sep 2017, the three telecom operators' fixed-line data and fixed-line internet revenues reached RMB 148.3 bln, up 9.5% YoY, accounting for 15.4% of telecom revenues. The telecom operators' mobile data and mobile internet revenues were RMB 412.6 bln, up 28.1% YoY, accounting for 42.9% of telecom revenues.
