China's March 2022 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 41% YoY, Up 44% MoM

A total of 21.46 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in March 2022, down 40.5% YoY, but up 44.4% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Of total shipments in March, 16.19 mln, or 75.4%, were 5G handsets, 5.13 mln, or 23.9%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.15 mln, or 0.7%, were 3G and 2G handsets.

In the 3-month period from Jan-Mar 2022, a total of 69.35 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 29.2% YoY. Of this total, 53.88 mln, or 77.7%, were 5G handsets, 14.95 mln, or 21.6%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.51 mln, or 0.7%, were 3G and 2G handsets.

A total of 19.22 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in March, down 42.4% YoY, but up 50.3% MoM, accounting for 89.5% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 21.03 mln, down 40.4% YoY, but up 44.5% MoM, and accounting for 98.0% of total handsets shipped in China in March.

In the 3-month period from Jan-Mar 2022, 57.65 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 33.5% YoY, accounting for 83.1% of total handset shipments. During the same 3-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 68.08 mln, or 98.2%, of total handsets shipped in China.

During the month of March, 44 new handset models were released in China, up 7.3% YoY and 51.7% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 27, or 61.4%, were 5G models, and 17, or 38.6%, were 4G models; 43, or 97.7%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 35, or 79.5%, were smartphone models.

In the 3-month period from Jan-Mar 2022, 103 new handset models were released in China, down 15.6% YoY; of this total, 57, or 55.3%, were 5G models, 46, or 44.7%, were 4G models, and none were 3G or 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Mar 2022, 98, or 95.1%, were from domestic brands, and 85, or 82.5%, were smartphone models.

Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
