China's April 2022 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 34% YoY, 16% MoM

A total of 18.08 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in April 2022, down 34.2% YoY and 15.8% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in April, 14.59 mln, or 80.7%, were 5G handsets, 3.30 mln, or 18.3%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.19 mln, or 1.1%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
In the 4-month period from Jan-Apr 2022, a total of 87.43 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 30.3% YoY. Of this total, 68.47 mln, or 78.3%, were 5G handsets, 18.25 mln, or 20.9%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.71 mln, or 0.8%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 16.43 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in April, down 33.6% YoY and 14.5% MoM, accounting for 90.9% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 17.69 mln, down 34.4% YoY and 15.9% MoM, and accounting for 97.8% of total handsets shipped in China in April.
In the 4-month period from Jan-Apr 2022, 74.08 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 33.5% YoY, accounting for 84.7% of total handset shipments. During the same 4-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 85.77 mln, or 98.1%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of April, 40 new handset models were released in China, up 25.0% YoY but down 9.1% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 21, or 52.5%, were 5G models, 18, or 45.0%, were 4G models, and 1, or 2.5%, was a 2G or 3G model; 39, or 97.5%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 36, or 90.0%, were smartphone models.
In the 4-month period from Jan-Apr 2022, 143 new handset models were released in China, down 7.1% YoY; of this total, 78, or 54.5%, were 5G models, 64, or 44.8%, were 4G models, and 1, or 0.7%, was a 3G or 2G model. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Apr 2022, 137, or 95.8%, were from domestic brands, and 121, or 84.6%, were smartphone models.

Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
