China's June 2022 Domestic Handset Shipments Up 9% YoY, 35% MoM

A total of 28.02 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in June 2022, up 9.2% YoY and 34.7% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in June, 23.03 mln, or 82.2%, were 5G handsets, 4.85 mln, or 17.3%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.14 mln, or 0.5%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
In the 6-month period from Jan-Jun 2022, a total of 136.25 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 21.7% YoY. Of this total, 109.23 mln, or 80.2%, were 5G handsets, 26.07 mln, or 19.1%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.94 mln, or 0.7%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 24.51 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in June, down 0.5% YoY, but up 47.7% MoM, accounting for 87.5% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 27.48 mln, up 9.1% YoY and 33.7% MoM, and accounting for 98.1% of total handsets shipped in China in June.
In the 6-month period from Jan-Jun 2022, 115.19 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 25.9% YoY, accounting for 84.5% of total handset shipments. During the same 6-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 133.81 mln, or 98.2%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of June, 34 new handset models were released in China, up 6.3% YoY and 41.7% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 25, or 73.5%, were 5G models, and 9, or 26.5%, were 4G models; 32, or 94.1%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 28, or 82.4%, were smartphone models.
In the 6-month period from Jan-Jun 2022, 201 new handset models were released in China, down 5.6% YoY; of this total, 112, or 55.7%, were 5G models, 88, or 43.8%, were 4G models, and 1, or 0.5%, was a 3G or 2G model. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Jun 2022, 192, or 95.5%, were from domestic brands, and 168, or 83.6%, were smartphone models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
