China's July 2022 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 31% YoY, 29% MoM

A total of 19.91 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in July 2022, down 30.6% YoY and 28.9% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Of total shipments in July, 14.67 mln, or 73.7%, were 5G handsets, 4.86 mln, or 24.4%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.38 mln, or 1.9%, were 3G and 2G handsets.

In the 7-month period from Jan-Jul 2022, a total of 156.16 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 23.0% YoY. Of this total, 123.91 mln, or 79.3%, were 5G handsets, 30.93 mln, or 19.8%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 1.32 mln, or 0.8%, were 3G and 2G handsets.

A total of 18.28 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in July, down 29.4% YoY and 25.4% MoM, accounting for 91.8% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 19.12 mln units, down 31.2% YoY and 30.4% MoM, and accounting for 96.0% of total handsets shipped in China in July.

In the 7-month period from Jan-Jul 2022, 133.47 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 26.4% YoY, accounting for 85.5% of total handset shipments. During the same 7-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 152.93 mln, or 97.9%, of total handsets shipped in China.

During the month of July, 22 new handset models were released in China, down 15.4% YoY and 35.3% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 9, or 40.9%, were 5G models, 12, or 54.5%, were 4G models, and 1, or 4.5%, was a 3G or 2G model; 18, or 81.8%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 18, or 81.8%, were smartphone models.

In the 7-month period from Jan-Jul 2022, 223 new handset models were released in China, down 6.7% YoY; of this total, 121, or 54.3%, were 5G models, 100, or 44.8%, were 4G models, and 2, or 0.9%, were 3G or 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Jul 2022, 210, or 94.2%, were from domestic brands, and 186, or 83.4%, were smartphone models.

Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
