Rumor: Foxconn Starts Unicom iPhone Production

An industry source who asked to remain anonymous has confirmed that Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn (2038.HK; 2354.TW) has begun mass production of China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) customized 3G Apple iPhone at its Shenzhen production facility under the codename "90." The handset, currently in the network access permit application process at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)'s China Telecommunication Technology Labs (CTTL), is expected to hit the market with the model number A1324 and will not have Wi-Fi functionality. Within Foxconn, the standard iPhone 3G is codenamed "82", while the standard iPhone 3GS is codenamed "88." The "90" iPhone is using two production lines, but so far no concrete figures on output have come to light. Management at Foxconn China has declined to comment on the news.
