China Unicom Expands Budget Calling Plan to More Provinces

National Business Daily, 4/25/12

Calling plans similar to Zhejiang Unicom's unlimited intra-network 2G calling plan "Suiyi Da" ("Call As You Like") have quickly spread to Beijing, Hunan, Hubei, Gansu, Guangxi, and other provinces, with monthly rates ranging from RMB 3 to RMB 28. Some plans include unlimited calls and others incorporate minute restrictions (such as 3,000 limited minutes). Wen Baoqiu, director of information services at China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) headquarters, told reporters at the National Business Daily that China Unicom headquarters has consistently been in on the introduction of "Suiyi Da" packages across provinces.

An industry insider reported that although the Zhejiang Communications Administration recently called for a halt to Zhejiang Unicom's "Suiyi Da" plans, this poses little threat to Zhejiang Unicom, as the matter will ultimately lie in the hands of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
