Rumor: China Unicom to Restructure E-Commerce Operations

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) is planning to restructure its Electronic Channel Center, according to a Sohu IT report. Unicom will rename the department the China Unicom E-Commerce Department and establish e-commerce operations teams in all municipal offices. The department has recently updated its website to resemble that of other e-commerce websites like Chinese B2C e-commerce site Dangdang (NYSE: DANG) and Alibaba Group's B2C e-commerce site TMall.

China Unicom's Electronic Channel Center saw a transaction volume of RMB 23.07 bln in 2011, up 86% compared with RMB 12.4 bln in 2010, accounting for 11% of China Unicom's 2011 total revenue. China Unicom's Electronic Channel Center had 110 mln users in 2011, double the 57 mln it had in 2010.
