China Aiming for Commercial GPON Networks by H2 2008

Ccidcom, 11/12/07

Deputy head of the Telecommunications Standards Institute Ao Li has indicated that in China GPON equipment has achieved the major functionality required by ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector standards.

However, improvements to system functionality and network management are still necessary, TDM processing requires optimization and commercialization of ASIC chipsets (particularly OLT-side) needs improvement.

Unlike the widely-used EPON technology, GPON is still undergoing interconnectability testing by the Telecommunications Standards Institute and China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK). It is hoped that GPON will be running commercially in China in the later half of 2008.
