Rumor: 30-plus TD-SCDMA Handset Models Win Access Permits

China Business News, 4/14/08

A ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) TD-SCDMA spokesperson has revealed that the Ministry of Industry and Information (MII) is accelerating the process of testing and issuing network access permits for TD-SCDMA handsets. So far five batches have been tested, with a total of over thirty models approved.

China Telecommunication Technology Labs (CTTL), the testing organization, indicated that it is also to speed up the approval process in order to relieve the shortage of TD-SCDMA handsets, with permits to be issued after the testing of only one device.

A planning official at China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) marketing department indicated that second-round procurement will depend on current sales performance. However there is currently no schedule for that second round.
