Li Shihe: 2-3 Years Needed for TD-SCDMA Scale-up

Digitimes, 6/20/08

Former Datang Mobile chief scientist Li Shihe, commonly known as the "Father of TD-SCDMA," claims that Beijing's network performed the most poorly during its TD-SCDMA trials, while Qingdao and Guangdong maintained close to 100% connection rates. In cities where it has TD-SCDMA coverage, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) is finding the dropped-connection rate for the networks lower than those for its GSM counterpart. Li expects TD-SCDMA network construction to take two to three years to reach any scale, and does not expect China to achieve universal coverage in that time frame. The scientist also stated that Shanghai's TD-SCDMA network would be usable from its Maglev train.
