Rumor: Google Books to Launch in China in H2 2011

Caiing, 1/11/11

Google will enter China's digital literature market in H2 2011, according to a source within the company.

According to official Google data, as of December Google Books had approximately 3 mln titles, including a number that were scanned as part of Google's global book scanning project launched in 2004, and titles from over 4,000 publishing industry partners including Random House and MacMillan.

Currently the majority of new books available are priced between USD 10 and USD 15, but prices are expected to be reduced for the China market.

Google also foresees potential difficulties, according to the source, and as part of its preparations is working to secure regulatory approval as early as possible.
