MIIT Releases 12th Five-Year Plan for Digital TV & Digital Home

Sina Tech, 2/24/12

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has announced its development plans for the electronic and information product manufacturing industry during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015). The "Digital Television and Digital Home Industry Development Plans for the 12th Five-Year Plan Period" calls for China's digital TV and digital home industry to be the world's largest developer and manufacturer of digital TVs and key components by the end of the plan period. The MIIT's plans also call for audiovisual manufacturing industry sales - comprising mainly products in the digital TV and digital home category - to reach RMB 2 trln in 2015, double 2010's RMB 1 trln, with USD 100 bln in exports. China will improve technology and product quality for flat-panel displays, set-top boxes (STBs), and chip design and manufacturing over the next five years, with flat-panel televisions to account for 95% or more of all television exports.

During the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010), sales for China's DTV-centric audiovisual industry grew from RMB 396.7 bln to RMB 1.004 trln. China exported a total of 266.64 mln television sets for an export value of USD 52.37 bln, accounting for 58.6% of all televisions sold. In 2010 alone, China exported 118 mln television sets, or 49% of all televisions sold worldwide, and 123 mln digital STBs, for 76.6% of the global total. The proportion of flat-panel televisions rose from 25% of televisions to 79%, with energy-saving LED-backlit flat panels accounting for 18% of televisions in 2010.
