China Aims for 80% Self-sufficiency Rate in Flat Panels by 2015

EEPW.com.cn, 3/05/12

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) stated in the 12th Five-Year Plan that during the period of the Plan, the average annual sales revenue growth rate for China's information technology manufacturing industry will be approximately 10%. One of the objectives outlined in the report was a flat-panel display self-sufficiency rate of above 80%. Industry forecasts estimate that domestic demand for TV-use flat panels will exceed 100 mln units by 2015.

According to the Plan, LCD, plasma, and OLED displays will be the focus of development in the display industry. The Plan proposed the promotion of small and medium-size OLED technology development and industrial applications, and the study of large-size OLED technology and process integration.

Hao Yabin, Vice President of the China Video Industry Association, said that excluding BOE and China Star Optoelectronics, if other China-based next generation production lines (e.g. Samsung, LG Display and InfoVision Optoelectronics) can design and start manufacturing, then it will be possible to complete the national 80% self-sufficiency goal in time.
