Xiaomi Begins Sales of Premium Themes in MIUI App Store

DoNews, 11/05/12

Beijing-based handset developer Xiaomi has begun selling premium themes from third-party developers in its new MIUI Version 4's mobile OS app store. The move represents Xiaomi's first step towards monetization in its MIUI app store, as all apps and skins in the store had previously been available free of charge. Users can purchase themes using Xiaomi's "Mi Coin" virtual currency. Mi coins can be purchased using either third-party payment processor Alipay or mobile phone recharge cards, with a 1:1 RMB-to-Mi coin exchange rate. One theme, "Mi Lei Shidai Xiu," is priced at RMB 2. Users can also use Mi coins to purchase mobile games from Xiaomi's game center.

Editor's Note: As a response to user concerns, Xiaomi has promised that all Xiaomi self-designed skins will remain available free of charge.
